What is Green Island?
Green Island is a unique mini plant that serves to collect, separate, sanitize, compact and recycle urban solid wastes (U.S.W.). It is designed so that the company, Ecoverde S.R.L., can treat and transform the waste resources, right at the collection point.

The main purpose of the Green Island is to sort, recover and dispose of U.S.W. in compliance with the Ronchi decree and to prevent pollution.

The Green Island plant optimizes the handling of U.S.W. both when waste collection is differentiated ― when the parties delivering the wastes (the general population) help to provide an advantage ― and when the product is undifferentiated.

The plant is, in fact, able to “automatically differentiate the wastes” and treat the U.S.W. as a "resource".
Recovery and processing of paper and cardboard
The user will feed the material in through a hatch that is automatically opened with a special magnetic card. After being weighed, the material is dumped into a shredder that reduces it to relatively homogeneous dimensions.

In the following phase, the material is fed into a series of pulpers that work it into as uniform a paste as possible.

From the last of the three pulpers, the paste is compacted and sent into a storage tank. In due time it will be picked up and taken to the paper-mill.
Recovery and processing of glass
In this section, designed to recover glass, the user feeds the material in through a hatch that is automatically opened with a special magnetic card.

After being weighed, the material is dumped into a steel duct where rotating steel brushes and high pressure water, supplied by a 14 kW hydrojet, eliminate the labels from the bottle necks and clean the material.

The glass is then minced with a 7.5 kW grinder to achieve sufficiently homogeneous dimensions and then a powerful vacuum sucks up the labels and collars that were previously separated.
Treatment of unsorted wastes
After an initial mincing and separation of the steel and aluminum, an immersion wash is performed to eliminate oils and materials such as plastics, wood, polystyrene and all light, dry materials.

These are then sorted and stored in a tank.

The wet organic material is filtered and stored separately after any inert materials such as stones, glass, shells, sand, soil, etc have been sorted out.
Recovery and processing of plastic
In the plastics collection sector, the user feeds the material in through a door that automatically opens with a special magnetic card.
Collection of steel and aluminum
Steel: after a first indistinct mincing, the material is extracted, washed, reminced, rewashed and stored in a container.

Aluminum: is expelled form the mass of wastes, washed, reminced and stored in a separate container.
Drugs and dead batteries
The users set these in two static containers integrated into the machine.
